White Horse, Yukon, February 18 - 21
On February 18 I flew from Kansas City to Whitehorse, Yukon Territories in Canada for meetings of the Collaborative Communities project. Because of weather, I was routed through Las Vegas and was very late in arriving in Whitehorse. This is an interesting time to be in the North because it is the time of t
he shortest day length. Whitehorse has their annual Sourdough Rendevous Festival so there were a lot of people in town and lots of things going on.
Our meetings were with several representatives of local First Nations. We discussed strategies for regional cooperations for better government and economic development. After one session, a local native dance groups entertained us. After another, we met with young apprentice artists who were learning traditional native art forms.
In the evening after the meetings we went downtown
and took in some of the festivities including the Sourdough Queen contest, Sourdough Sam constest, and the famous Snow Shoe Shufflers.
