Athens, Greece, December 3 - 10, 2006

On Sunday, December 3 I departed for Greece. We had had a huge storm on the Thursday before which left 14 inches of snow. I was worried about the highway, which had been closed on Friday, but everything went well. I left St. Louis about noon on Sunday and arrived in Athens about 4 pm on Monday after travelling through Detroit and Amsterdam. On Tuesday, I gave a 3 hours seminar to students at the Agricultural University of Athens and on Wednesday I gave a lecture to the faculty on rural policy in the US. Thursday and Friday were devoted to a meeting of our international project on European multifunctionality policy. (I have included a picture of our research team just to prove that I do work on these trips).

On Saturday I worked with colleagues on other projects in the morning and then went touring in the afternoon. I saw the Acropolis, and then went down to the Aegean Sea. Saturday night I went to dinner with a colleague and then straight to the airport about 3 am Sunday morning to catch a flight back to Missouri.

Athens is an amazing place the age of the ancient places are so much older than any other place I have been. I look forward to returning when I can spend more time sight seeing.

The photos below are, in order, the Olympic stadium, built for the first games of modern era in 1896; the Roman Theater just below the Acropolis; the Temple of Zues, from the Acropolis; the Parthenon, from below; and a view of the city from the Acropolis.
